My CEA Training

After completing my CEA credential, I felt it necessary to obtain hands-on experience in this field. I asked Stephen Penney, a partner with Lennox & Penney LLP in Cambridge, Ontario, if he would serve as my mentor and invest in my professional development as a Certified Executor Advisor (CEA). Stephen agreed, and for the latter part of the summer of 2020 he included me in meetings and discussions with clients, permitted me to review and develop a better understanding of the varieties of and phrasing used in the writing of wills and power of attorneys (POA) and guided me in a better understanding of probate and intestate estates. It was while serving alongside Stephen that I began to understand how my estate firearms training and passion could be valuable to his clients.

My Estate Firearms Specialty

My passion for the outdoors, hunting, and shooting was inspired by my dad and participation in scouting more than fifty years ago. I received my first firearms training in Pennsylvania on the shooting range at Camp Agawam while attending Scout camp. Shortly after that I continued my training in hunter’s safety and firearms courses offered through the Pennsylvania Game Commission. While in high school, I joined the Naval Junior ROTC program and served as the Drill Instructor. During those years I received firearms training at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Michigan and at the United State Coast Guard Training Center in New Jersey. After high school I enlisted in the United States Navy and served on active duty in Rhode Island.

After leaving the USN, I completed two degree programs in university and moved to New Jersey where I continued in firearms safety training courses offered by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. My most recent firearms training courses were completed to receive my firearms Possession and Acquisition License in Ontario, Canada, where I now reside.

I have the knowledge and experience needed for the probate process for firearms appraisal, the proper and legal transfer of firearms by estate executors to heirs and beneficiaries, and the safe transport and handling of firearms and ammunition for sale or consignment to licensed firearms dealers and auction houses in Ontario.

My Coaching Style

Stress has become a term that is used liberally in everyday speech.  Compare that with fifty years ago when it rarely was spoken of in any conversation. A lot has changed. Stress appears to be a central fixture of modern living. Often the most stressed members of the family after a death are the executors.

I have coached over 700 adults and young adults during my career.

Coaching is one of my favourite styles of leadership. As a leader, you can coach for performance, addressing and fixing a specific problem or challenge, or you can coach for development, which turns the focus from the issue to the person dealing with the issue.

I choose to coach for development through conversations and questions that will call you forward to learn, improve, and grow in character, competence, and confidence.

As an experienced coach and leader, I have learned that the more you know about the personalities and character traits of those with whom you are working, the better you can manage the five common areas causing stress: trust, conflict, commitment, accountability, and results. With over twenty years of experience using the DISC® personal assessment tool, I have found this tool vital in developing healthy relationships within a team and organization, while at the same time empowering individuals with a better understanding of who they really are. This is a key dimension in estates where there are many beneficiaries.

I use the DISC® model to provide a common language people can use to better understand themselves and those they interact with—and then use this knowledge to reduce conflict and improve working relationships with the estate.
